Jake (right) was nine when he decided to teach himself a few tricks on his scooter. After years of hard work, he has recently competed in the Prevail Skatehouse Under 18’s Jam, in which he came joint second – a fantastic achievement as he is only in Year 8.
He has faced considerable adversity on his journey to success, including enduring a severe sprain injury after going down a ramp, and putting his hand out to save himself from face planting. In spite of the potential dangers, he enjoys scooting because it gets him outside and gives him the opportunity to learn new tricks. He considers it a sport and even says that, ‘it is better for me than playing Xbox in the house.’
Jake wishes he had more time to practice and that more people were able to buy scooters and get out on the ramps. “I hope I can possibly be able to teach other people in the future and maybe…teach them to get out of the house!”
